The IUCN (International Union for Conservation and Nature) Red List is a massive enterprise involving the IUCN Global Species program staff, partner organizations, and experts in the IUCN Species Survival Commission. It is a powerful tool used by government agencies, wildlife departments, conservation-related NGOs, natural resource planners, and educational organizations.
At its most basic, it is a list of species and their status. However, it is also a critical indicator of the health of the planet’s biodiversity, used to inform and catalyze action for conservation and policy change. Users of this site will find information on range, population size, habitat, ecology, use and/or trade, threats, and conservation efforts that will help inform necessary conservation decisions.
