Who We Are

We are a group of innovators, truth seekers, and thought leaders. We began in animal welfare and have expanded our understanding to encompass other topics. We are educators, animal lovers, environmental advocates, and justice protectors. We foster awareness, insight and conversation.

THE STORY BEHIND JYO

JYO stands for The Journey You Own.

It began with requests from people working in the field of animal welfare asking for tools to increase their productivity. Through conversations, it became an opportunity to bring awareness, balance, personal values, and choices into daily conversation. We have integrated these concepts with issues of concern to us: social justice, education, climate change, and animal welfare.

We view this collective venture as a platform for co-creation through conversations and the sharing of information to increase awareness and compassion.

Born and raised in Prince Georges County, Maryland – one of the wealthiest Black counties in the U.S., I was allowed to explore my identity as a Black lesbian within the confines of (relative) safety. I grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My mother is from Louisiana and my father is from Sierra Leone, West Africa. Born at the twilight of the people power revolution in the Philippines, my childhood saw a new daylight of freedom, faith and hope. I grew up in the formative years of my life moving from state to state, all told, 5 by the time I was 6. I developed my social skills in the wake of having to make an entire new set of friends in a new place nearly every year until we settled in the suburbs … Read more

I was born and raised in the liberal-leaning suburbs of a red state. My hometown has a troubling racial history, the echoes of which are still felt today as it continues to be one of the most segregated cities in the country. As a middle-class white girl, born to liberal parents and attending (somewhat) racially … Read more

From a young age, I was immersed in science, living each summer at the Bowdoin College Scientific Station at Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy. Kent Island had no running water and the only electricity came from solar power. The only way to take a hot shower was to heat up a basin of … Read more
