A global food crisis may be less than a decade away.
Sara Menker quit a career in commodities trading to figure out how the global value chain of agriculture works. Her work has led to some startling predictions. She estimates that the world will reach an agricultural tipping point of surging demand surpassing the system’s structural capacity for food by 2027. According to her research, within the decade, the world could be short 214 trillion calories each year. For reference, if you took the calories in all the Big Macs McDonalds has ever sold, you wouldn’t be able to cover the caloric deficit the world will see in 1 year.
